Project 2
Register of Stateswomen and Men
What?
To capture the views and experiences about Federation from Australia’s former Governors, Governors-General, Premiers, Prime Ministers and High Court Judges.
The objective of the project is to re-examine the ‘Federation compact’ and how it works from those who directly experienced it. It will initially be a pilot project to include a selected number of participants.
For some, Federation represents one of Australia’s ‘wicked’ problems. For others, one of Australia’s greatest accomplishments. For most, somewhere it between.

Why?
Prior to 1901, the views of the Founders were publicly known and captured. Outside the government-funded ‘anniversary dates’, there is no institutional record specifically about our Federation. This needs to be rectified.
A detailed concept document is available on request.

Funding
Consistent with the long-standing Australian folklore of self sufficiency, Foundation 1901 will be funded through majority non-government sources. It was granted charity status in 2014 and non-enduring DGR status in 2019 until 2021. Further DGR arrangements for 2021 onwards have indicative approval.
The establishment of the Foundation, while important, is a starting point in generating a much needed permanent national discussion about our Federation that will, of necessity, include many voices and interests.
