Alfred Deakin has a suburb, university and a research institute named after him. But what is he remembered for?
A Victorian, he is best known as one of the influential founders of the Australian Federation achieved in 1901. He was Australia’s 2nd Prime Minister serving the Commonwealth on 3 separate occasions in that capacity. He was our 1st Commonwealth Attorney General. He also served in the Victorian Parliament.
Mr Deakin was perhaps the most articulate of our founders and probably the most charismatic. He was also the most unconventional.
His legacy to Australia is immense in all that he did and the vision that he saw.
He died on 7th October 1919, a century ago today.
Get to know Mr Deakin. It might also be possible to talk to him. He rests at St Kilda Cemetery.
